Mitsubishi India to launch five new cars by 2016

It is no secret that Mitsubishi India isn’t really among the most ‘active’ car manufacturers present in India. While some of its models, namely the Lancer and the Pajero SFX, gained a lot of popularity and enjoy quite a cult status, the manufacturer has failed to capitalize on the success its initial models enjoyed. The last new car launch from Mitsubishi India was that of the Pajero Sport, which is eseentially a rebadged Challenger. The Pajero Sport has managed to get only a luke warm response from the car buyers and the need of the hour for Mitsubishi is to bring in some of its most successful models to our shores.

Recently, in an interview with Autocar Professional, Mitsubishi’s executive officer and corporate general manager Asia and ASEAN office Ken Horinouchi divulged some details on the company’s strategy for near future. As per Horinouchi, the car maker will be launching as many as five new models in India by 2016. While all of these upcoming models will be brought to us via CKD route, a possibility of local production can’t really be ruled out.

One of the five new cars coming to us would be the Mitsubishi Mirage. The Mirage could rival the new Maruti Celerio, Hyundai i10, and the likes. Powering the car is a 77bhp, 1.2-litre, three-cylinder petrol engine that can be had with either a manual or a CVT automatic option.

Also in the pipeline are two new SUVs, one of which could very well be the new-generation Mitsubishi Outlander.

Nothing more is currently known about this but you can safely expect us to update you with more details as soon as we manage to dig out some.
