Mercedes unveils Beltbag airbag technology. To debut in the new S Class next year

Mercedes recently unveiled its Beltbag airbag technology for use in rear seats of its cars. The Beltbag technology consists of an airbag is essentially an inflatable seat-belt strap. The manufacturer claims that this technology reduces the risk of an injury to rear passengers in an event of car’s head-on collision. The Beltbag works by reducing the strain that develops on the ribcage in such a mishap. The Beltbag has a gas generator that is deployed by the airbag control unit in event of a frontal crash. On deployment of the airbag, the larger surface area distributes the force on the passenger and hence, lessens the impact. The Beltbag technology should debut in the new S-Class that will be launched next year.
