Apart from being birds of prey, Kestrel and Goshawk are the product code-names for two upcoming Tata SUVs that’ll see the light of the day in 2017. Carrying project code-names Q501 and Q502, both are expected to be loosely based on the Discovery Sport’s Land Rover LR-MS platform, a heavily modified variant of the Ford EUCD base. The home-grown SUVs will share structural bits like the floor-pan with the baby Disco, but will feature Tata specific styling on the outside.

While the Goshawk (Q502) will accommodate seven seats, the smaller Kestrel (Q501) will come with five. The former will be positioned above the Safari Storme and use Fiat’s 2.0-liter Multijet II diesel engine which is expected to make between 150 and 175 PS; lower-powered versions of the same could be used as well. The latter could be powered by a 1.5-litre Fiat Multijet diesel engine, that the Italians are developing for the Indian car market at the moment.

The Goshawk’s pricing is rumored to be about INR 13-18 lakhs and will be a direct competitor to the Mahindra XUV 500. On the offing should be multiple airbags, a 10-speaker HARMAN infotainment system with AVN and other contemporary features. With a purported price tag of INR 11-14.5 lakhs and five seats, the Krestel will kill the joy of the Renault Duster, higher variants of the Ford Ecosport, the upcoming Maruti Suzuki SX4 Cross and the Hyundai’s ix25 based compact SUV. Features could include dual airbags, a touch-screen HARMAN infotainment system and more.

The Aria based Tata Hexa Concept has nothing to do with all of the above, and will see a launch happening within the next year.
