The next generation Hyundai i10, which may well become a new segment player for Hyundai slotting itself between the i10 and i20 has been caught testing yet again in Chennai. While speculations about the new i10 replacing the current gen i10 are rife, it seems unlikely that Hyundai will replace the current gen i10 entirely. The new i10 for the world will most likely sell alongside the current gen i10 in India. The current i10 will undergo a facelift by the end of 2013. The next gen i10 may well be called the Brilliant for the Indian market and i15 for some others.

The big news about the next gen i10, or the Brilliant is arrival of a diesel option. The car will be powered by a 1.1 liter three-cylinder CRDi oil burner unit which produces 75PS of power and about 200Nm of peak torque. The engine isn’t just spunky and fuel efficient but has been lauded for its eco-friendly credentials as well.

Apart from the normal five speed manual shifter, we would love to see an auto-transmission on the car – something which is a crying need in the India metro cities these days, though we know it’s a little too much to ask for. The 1.1 liter engine, available on the i20 in some markets makes the car capable of a 0-100 km/h sprint in 16 secs and a top speed of about 165km/h. Expect some earth shattering figures as regards fuel efficiency as well.

Unlike the cutesy current gen i10, the new i10 will feature the Fluidic Sculpture design philosophy and will turn out sharper. A hint of it can be seen in the exposes headlamps of the test car.

The car is expected to make its debut at the Frankfurt Motor Show this year. Expect an India launch early next year.
