Hyundai Elite i20 Automatic to be launched soon

When Hyundai launched the Elite i20 in 2014, it went on sale with the petrol and diesel engine options mated to a manual gearbox. The earlier gen i20 was available with a 1.4 liter petrol mill mated to a 4 speed automatic transmission. This engine was a direct import and jacked up the prices but had decent power (99 bhp). Now, according to a report on Zigwheels, the Elite i20 automatic will be launched in India in a couple of months.

Hyundai receives overwhelming response for the Elite i20

According to the report, Hyundai won’t be going the AMT way and stick to the regular torque convertor automatic transmission. The 1.2 liter VTVT petrol engine will be the one found under the hood of the Elite i20 automatic. The 1.2 liter mill churns out 83PS and 115Nm of peak torque.

With the option of an automatic transmission, the Elite i20 won’t lose out sales numbers due to the lack of automatic transmission in it’s segment where the Ford Figo, Honda Jazz, VW Polo and the Maruti Baleno are already available with automatic transmissions.

  1. Pratim, please mind your language on a public forum like this.

Second, I own petrol i20 since more than 3 years. I know exactly what I have written. The Hyundai engine is not supposed to carry weight of 1100 kg + passengers. It is fine in city area and within i10. I have faced so bad times on highway that I scream. Linear power delivery does not help once you slot fifth gear.

Third, check out traditional torque convertor type gear boxes in Hyundai cars below Creta. All are 4 spees units. This car used to have auto box earlier (before Elite) with 1.4 engine. This had good power. But engine being larger capacity than 1.2 (petrol) it had double the excise duty. With auto it became too much expensive (1.75 lakhs more than corresponding manual).

Fourth, it got car of the year award because of excellent diesel engine with six speed manual gears (again in diesel) and overall premium finish. Petrol engine was not ignored.

@satish its not underpowered u crap.its linear in power delivery.which is peaceful to calm driver.its diff from suzuki and baleno.dont make stupid comments without driving the i20.its also has 5 speed gearbox.remember thay are not racing car.i20 even got the car of the year 2015.i think u smart enough than those expert and jury

  3. The i20 petrol is already a dud car to drive. With automatic it will be even more slow to move. The premium hatch market demands performance and 5 gears. Hyundai should really think forward and develope such engine and transmission combo as long term solution.
