American car maker Ford has won a lot of rave reviews for is 1.0 litre EcoBoost petrol engine. This is the same engine that will debut in India with the much publicized Ford EcoSport compact crossover and the motor already powers the compact crossover in many markets around the world. Ford has now launched a bigger petrol engine in the EcoBoost lineup of motors.

The new engine displaces 1.5 litres and becomes the fifth motor in the Ford EcoBoost engine line up. The Ford EcoBoost family of engines now consists of 1.0L, 1.5L, 1.6L, 2.0L and 3.5L engines. Ford hasn’t yet released the technical specifications of the new EcoBoost engine. However, Ford has commented that the new four cylinder, turbocharged direct injection petrol engine will be almost as powerful as the 1.6 litres unit. Also, the new motor will have better fuel economy and lesser emissions.

The engine sports an aluminium block and benefits from twin overhead camshafts, variable valve timing and an integrated exhaust manifold. This feature is also seen on the headed-to-India 1.0 litre EcoBoost engine. The new 1.5 litres EcoBoost engine from Ford becomes the first engine from the car maker to have a computer controlled clutch for the water pump.

The new 1.5 litres EcoBoost engine will be produced at Ford’s engine manufacturing unit in Craiova, Romania and production is expected to commence towards the end of this month.

The new engine will debut with the China-spec Ford Mondeo that will be unveiled at the Auto Shanghai 2013.
