Ferdinand Alexander Porsche, designer of the 911, dies at the age of 76

April 5 of this year will always be remembered as a dark and sad day by many car lovers around the world. It is no secret that Porsche 911 is the most recognized performance car world over. We know of people who align with either a prancing horse or a bull but they all have great things to say about the 911. Now, the sad news is that Ferdinand Alexander Porsche, the designer of the first Porsche 911, died yesterday at an age of 76.

Ferdinand Alexander was born in Stuttgart on December 11 1935 and was the grandson of Ferdinand Porsche, the founder of Porsche and creator of the VW bug. Ferdinand Alexander started with the development of the legendary 911 in late 1950s and had completely designed the car by early 60s. The Porsche 911 was then introduced to public for the first time at the 1963 Frankfurt motor show.

Ferdinand Alexander is also credited with designing numerous competition cars for Porsche. He resigned when the company went public in 1972. However, Alexander held a post at the the supervisory board until the middle of the last decade.

Matthias Müller, Chief Executive Officer, Porsche AG, said,“As creator of the Porsche 911, he established a design culture that molds our sportscars still today. His philosophy of good design is for us a legacy that we will also honour in the future.”

We will always remember Alexander for him designing the iconic 911.
