End of the Road for Mitsubishi Lancer and Pajero SFX

Without meaning to offend anyone, we advise you to see an optometrist in case you had not seen this coming. Hindustan Motors-Mitsubishi has finally decided to discontinue the very popular Pajero SFX SUV and my hot favourite Lancer sedan in Indian car market. It may be noted that petrol variants of the Lancer, which included the very capable 1.8 INVEX, have long been axed and now, the car maker has also stopped selling the diesel variant. The Pajero Sport will now be marketed as a replacement for Pajero SFX. It may be noted that the Japanese car maker recently commenced the CKD assembly of Pajero Sport and has given a huge price cut to the new SUV.

The India-spec Mitsubishi Lancer, which provided the base for the Evo 6, belongs to the last decade of 90s and have had been soldiering on in India since almost 15 years. The Cedia, on which the Evo 9 is based, is the logical successor of old Lancer and has been doing duty in upper C segment of Indian car market since some time now. However, Mitsubishi needs to plonk in a modern diesel engine in the Cedia for it to have a better showing on the sales chart.

What we really wish for is the latest gen Lancer to come to India.
