India’s first homemade sports car, the DC Avanti was launched in Pune yesterday, with prices starting from INR 35.93 lakh (ex-showroom Pune). The launch event took place at Maharastra’s one and only DC Design dealership, located in Pune*. Mr Dilip Chhabria himself kick-started the proceedings.
Many of you are already familiar with the Avanti. It isn’t DC’s maiden attempt at building a sports-car though, as there have been other instances in the past; with one concept even featuring in a Bollywood movie. But this one is actually being produced at DC’s plant in Talegaon, near Pune and can be bought by normal people like you and me. The Avanti was first previewed in 2014, at the Auto Expo in Delhi.
The Avanti will feature a carbon-fibre body shell and gets a lightweight space frame chassis. Power comes from a mid-mounted, euro-5 complaint, 2.0-litre turbocharged petrol engine that develops 248 bhp and 340 Nm of torque, that drive the rear wheels through a 6-speed manual gearbox. DC claims that the car can do a 0-100 kph sprint in 6 seconds and attain an electronically limited top speed of 180 kph.
