In a bid to increase vehicle visibility, the think-tank at the Indian Ministry of Road Transport and Highways is concocting a plan to make Daytime Running Lamps a standard fitment across all two wheelers sold in India. Soon, there’ll be a million fire-flies on the road, as something called the Automatic Headlamp-On(AHO) will be compulsory. This feature, already a standard fitment on European bikes since 2003, keeps the headlamps on along-with the engine- so that you can’t switch it off during the day.
And admit it, since you’re the most vulnerable person in India astride a two-wheeler, it’s a rather welcoming move, but how much of a benefit will that have in the Indian motorcycling scenario still goes to be seen. Honda and Hero MotoCorp have also warmed up to the idea, and the Ministry is having a word with Indian Institute of Delhi about developing the first prototype for such a mechanism.
No word yet on when the idea will be up and running- watch this space.
