Datsun to unveil new compact crossover concept on October 29

Datsun Concpet Teaser

The Renault Kwid will have a brother from another mother soon, because come October 29, Datsun will showcase a new compact crossover concept at the 2015 Tokyo Motor Show, that’ll see reality and hit the production lines next year. For now however, a teaser image will have to suffice. Reports indicate that the concept will be the second prequel to the “I2” project, with the redi-Go concept being the first one.

To be based on based on Renault-Nissan Alliance’s modular CMF-A platform, the same that underpins the Renault Kwid, the I2 will be a similarly sized compact crossover, or a micro-SUV. In all probability, the I2 will be manufactured in India first, and exported to other emerging markets around the world. The teaser image shows Datsun’s signature, chrome bordered trapezoidal grille peeping in, along with distinctive fog lamp housings, swept back headlamps and some wheel arch trim.

Engine options are unknown, but it is now being speculated that the I2 won’t employ the Kwid’s 0.8-litre, 3-cylinder motor. The Datsun I2 is scheduled for a launch at the Auto Expo 2016 next February and will be the revived marque’s third model after the Go and the Go+.
