The new F8x BMW M cars ditch the lusty V8 from the last generation E9x M3 for efficiency and environmental reasons, and go for  a 3-litre, in-line six-cylinder twin-turbo engine instead. The new mill produces 431 bhp of power and 550Nm of twist. Power is feed to the rear wheels via a six-speed manual transmission or a seven-speed automatic transmission. With the automatic configuration, the M4 coupe/M3 sedan hits the ton mark from a standstill in 4.1 seconds while the manual does the same in 4.3 seconds. The top speed on the M4 coupe is electronically limited to 250 kph.

Drive shaft, roof, roof bow, trunk, and front strut brace are made out of carbon fibre reinforced plastic. The M4 coupe will be the first vehicle from the M family to have an electric power steering unit. The steering system has been specifically tuned for the M3 and M4. Like the new F10 M5, the M4 also features Active Sound Control which will spew live amplification of the exhaust noises inside the cabin via speakers.
