Auto Expo 2016: Top 5 production cars

The 2016 Auto Expo saw a number of manufacturers, international as well as from India coming to display their product portfolio. Some of these manufacturers also went on to launch and unveil some of their latest products for the Indian market. We pick the top five production cars from the 2016 Auto Expo.

Maruti Suzuki Vitara Brezza

Coming from the house of the country’s largest manufacturer, Maruti Suzuki, the Vitara Brezza is a compact SUV that was unveiled at the 2016 Auto Expo. Powering this SUV will be the company’s DDiS 200 diesel engine that will produce a power output of 88.5 hp and a peak torque of 200 Nm. A petrol variant will be offered later in the Vitara Brezza’s life cycle. On the safety front, the compact SUV will come equipped with driver side airbag as standard while front passenger airbag and ABS with EBD will be an optional feature right from the base variant.

Toyota Kirloskar Motors, the Indian arm of Toyota Motor Corp, showcased a number of products at the 2016 Auto Expo, including the new Innova Crysta. The 2016 Innova, christened as the Innova Crysta, is based on the International Multi-purpose Vehicle (IMV) platform that also underpins the Fortuner. Powering this SUV is a 2.4-litre diesel engine that will produce around 150 hp of peak power and 340 Nm of maximum torque. This engine will come mated to an optional 6-speed auto transmission. Safety features on offer shall include airbags, ABS with Electronic Brake Force Distribution and Brake Assist as standard on all grades.

Honda BR-V

The Honda BR-V or Bold Runabout Vehicle was showcased for the first time in India at the 2016 Auto Expo. Based on the same platform that underpins the Amaze, Brio and Mobilio, the BR-V will be the first genuine 7 seater premium SUV. Powering the BR-V will be the 1.5 litre diesel and petrol motors with the diesel i-DTEC engine being good for 100 PS of power and 200 Nm of torque in its current state. Reports suggest that this engine will come mated to a 6 speed manual transmission. The petrol engine, on the other hand, could come mated to a 5 speed or a 6 speed transmission. This SUV will compete against the likes of the Hyundai Creta and the Renault Duster.

Tata Nexon

The Tata Nexon graced the Auto Expo for the second time after being displayed at the 2014 edition of the motoring event. This time, the home-grown SUV was displayed in its production ready form. The compact SUV will come powered by a 1.5 litre turbocharged diesel that would deliver 110 PS of power and 260 Nm of torque. Although much has not been revealed, reports suggest that the Nexon will come with 16 inch wheels while the interiors will get a 6.5 inch touchscreen infotainment system from Harman. The company is also expected customization options such as contrasting colour combinations for roof and body and body kits for the compact SUV.

Hyundai Tucson

Hyundai unveiled its new Tucson at the motoring event. This upcoming product from Hyundai will fill the segment gap between the Creta and the SantaFe. The new Tucson will debut with the company’s fluidic design philosophy. Powering the SUV will be a 2.0 CRDi diesel engine that will produce 182 hp and 400 Nm. Transmission duties will be taken care of by a 6 speed automatic gearbox. Once launched, the Tucson will lock horns with the Mahindra XUV 5OO and the upcoming Tata Hexa. The launch is expected to take this year and the SUV could come with a price tag of approximately Rs.17-20 lakhs.
