Auto Expo 2016: Honda Goldwing power cruiser is still gold

Honda Goldwing

Onlookers at the 2016 Auto Expo came up close and personal with the iconic Honda Goldwing. Widely considered as one of the best touring motorcycles in the world, the Honda Goldwing is close to 2 meters in length and weighs over 400 kilograms. Luggage capacity is rated at a massive 150 litres whereas a 25-litre fuel tank means that the Goldwing will get you home and dry across the remotest of landscapes.

Want some tunes along with the ride? The Goldwing’s 6-speaker 80W SRS surround-sound system with iPod, iPhone or USB stick connectivity will happily blare out music for you and even fellow motorists on the road. Winter cometh? The five-position heated grips, independently adjustable heated seats and foot-warming system will get the blood flowing back.  As the roads open up, kick back those shoes and relax as the electronic cruise-control system takes over.

The Goldwing hurtles down the road using its 1,832 cc liquid-cooled horizontally opposed six-cylinder gasoline engine with fuel injection that produces 118 hp at 5,500 rpm and 167 Nm at 4,000 rpm. Considering the leviathan proportions, the five-speed transmission features a slow-speed, electric reverse system. Anti-dive front suspension and a single shock absorber with computer-controlled spring preload adjustment and two memory presets mean that the Goldwing’s ride is cushier than your couch. The suspension has its work further cut by loungers masquerading as seats.

The juggernaut’s anchors comprise of dual full-floating 296 mm discs rubbing at three-piston calipers upfront, and a single ventilated 316 mm rear disc mated to a three-piston caliper. The Goldwing rides on a 130/70R-18 front tyre and a 180/60R-16 rear tyre.
