Audi A3 to debut in 2014

Premium automakers are on working hard to bring lower-priced models from their international lineup to India so as to push volumes. The X1 started it all, followed by Mercedes’ announcement of brining the A and B Class cars to India, and now it’s Audi India, planning to bring the sub-A4 A3 to us.

Michael Pershke, top man at Audi India said “We have certain products in mind which we want to introduce to gain leadership position in the Indian market. We are looking at adding on A3 to our portfolio and are conducting a market study to assess the feedback among consumers here”.

Audi has shown tremendous growth in the past year, and with the financial clout of the VW group behind it, seems committed to attain the leadership position in the Indian premium car market. They would require less-expensive products with price tags of around Rs 20 lakh for sales growth. The A3, which is positioned below the A4, the current cheapest offering from the Ingolstadt based automaker would help garner more volumes.

Here’s the international engine lineup for the Audi A3 engines

1.2 TFSI, 105 hp
1.4 TFSI, 125 hp
1.8 TFSI, 160 hp
2.0 TFSI, 200 hp
1.6 TDI, 90 hp
1.6 TDI, 105 hp
2.0 TDI, 140 hp
2.0 TDI, 170 hp

A few variants of the A3 may also come equipped with the Quattro 4×4 system. Transmission would primarily be a six-speed manual. The extremely fast and comfortably shifting S tronic will also be available. Shift paddles on the steering wheel may be offered on the auto variants. Auto tranny variants will have dual-clutch six or seven speed transmission, based on the power of the engine.

In the latest development, it has emerged that the Audi A3 will debut sometime in 2014 with a [roce tag of about INR 16 lakhs.
