Skoda Auto India today launched the third generation of the Skoda Superb at INR 22.68 Lakhs (Ex-showroom Mumbai) at an event in Mumbai. Apart from all-new styling, fresh, roomier interiors and new technologies, the new Superb will be powered by new engine configurations. Skoda has also reintroduced the exclusive Laurin & Klement (L&K) editions that will be placed at the top of the model range.

The new Skoda Superb has ticked every box to score high on the looks. Its elegance flows out with balanced proportions and a striking new design language. Crystalline elements run in detail through the exterior and interior.

Based on the MQB architecture the Superb boasts increased interior space, a longer wheelbase and wider track allowing the interior to be used more effectively.  Technically speaking the architecture has provided an increase of 39 mm in the elbow room for the driver and passengers, more legroom and headroom on the rear; all of this is more than in any other model in the segment.  Also a boot capacity of 625 litres is 30 litres bigger than in the outgoing model and highest in the segment. To add more space the rear backrest can be folded down from the boot at the touch of a button allowing items of up to 3.1 metres in length to fit in the new Skoda Superb.

The Superb is not only spacious but also the maker also claims that the Superb’s completely redeveloped chassis with MacPherson front struts and multi-link rear axle offers maximum ride stability in challenging situations. With the new configurations and reworked aerodynamics the 3rd-generation Superb is said to be more powerful than the previous version. The completely new interior continues the essential design details of the car’s exterior.

Powering the all new Skoda Superb will be two new configurations of petrol and diesel engines –  1.8 TSI petrol and the 2.0 TDI diesel. The Superb will roll out in 5 variants of the said engines. The 1798cc Turbocharged petrol engine will produce 178 bhp of power between 4,000 – 6,200 rpm and max torque of 320 Nm between 1,450 – 3900rpm. However the automatic (AT) variant will produce a max torque of 250Nm between 1,250 – 5,000rpm. On the manual variant the power will be pushed to the front wheels by a 6-speed fully synchronized transmission and an Automatic 7-speed DSG gearbox will do the duties on the AT version. When mated to an Automatic 6-speed DSG gearbox, the 1968cc Turbocharged diesel engine will spout a power of 174 bhp between 3,600-4,000rpm and a max torque of 350 Nm between 1,500 – 3,500rpm.

The Superb is equipped with a rear-view camera while the classic handbrake has been replaced with an Auto Held electromechanical parking brake. Completely new three-zone air conditioning ensures an optimal temperature throughout the interior of the car. The new SKODA Superb is available with an electronic panoramic glass roof and auxiliary heating, air-conditioned front seats, a wireless heated wind screen and heated washer jets. The rain/light sensor wiper feature aids the driving comfort. Instead in the rear left-hand door, there is now an umbrella in each of the two front doors.

The Innovative lighting systems, fitted with bi-xenon lamps include Adaptive Front-lighting System (AFS) function and LED DRLs. The new tech used in the headlamp unit significantly increases safety at night. The makers also say that the panoramic electric sunroof is made from tinted and heat-insulating glass that reflects 92 per cent of incoming heat and 90 per cent of incoming light.

The new SKODA Superb L&K edition features the SmartLink infotainment and a Canton sound system. Smart Link includes Mirror Link/Apple CarPlay/Android Auto and can easily be connected to the smartphone, and displays all the data on a 6.5-inch touch screen, thus providing access to all the apps. In addition, the infotainment system also offers Bluetooth, FM radio, RDS, JPEG viewer, an SD-card slot, plus an Aux-In and a USB socket, both of which are located in the central console. The Canton sound system setup includes twelve standard speakers with an impressive 610 W output.

Skoda calls the Superb as the cleverest Skoda ever and elaborates on 29 ‘Simply Clever’ features that make life easier for the driver and passengers.  Some of the so-called clever features are –

  • A tablet holder in the rear
  • Tablet storage compartment in the Jumbo Box in the front
  • A USB port and 230 V socket in the rear
  • New cargo fasteners to secure loose objects in the boot
  • Removable LED torch in the boot
  • Misfuel protection
  • Parking ticket holder on the inside of the A-pillar
  • Mechanical roller sun visors for the rear side windows

The new Superb is Skoda’s first model to offer the optional virtual pedal for contactless opening of the boot lid. The electric boot lid is also equipped with a practical tip to-close function.

On the security front the new Superb is fitted as standard with Electronic Stability Control including Multi-Collision Brake, electronic Tyre Pressure Monitoring, eight airbags, five three-point seat belts with fastening alerts as well as safety headrests. XDS+, an enhanced function of the electronic differential lock, also comes as standard.

2016 Skoda Superb will be available in 4 colours – Candy White, Brilliant Silver, Magnetic Brown, and Business Grey. The Superb will be available at all Skoda dealerships across the country from today.
