GTO

If you love Ferrari and the GTO, then this is a story for you.

250 GTO

Only 39 examples were ever produced, rare!

The Ferrari 250 GTO Berlinetta, is one of the most iconic and beautiful automobiles ever to be made. Designed by car-design legends like Sergio Scaglietti and Giotto Bizzarrini, the basic form of this racing car remains one of the most sensual to ever be penned. For those who aren’t Ferrari enthusiasts and haven’t heard of the GTO, we will give you a brief introduction. Let’s start from the beginning; The “250” in the name, stands for the size of each of the 12 cylinders of the V12 engine. In other words, the cubic capacity (cc) of the individual cylinders was 250cc. The “GTO” stands for Gran Turismo Omologato, which in Italian is Grand Touring Homologated. Ferrari produced the GTO between 1962-1964, specifically to enter the FIA’s (International Automobile Federation) Group 3 Grand Touring races.

The GTO’s design is truly organic and typically Italian.

In 1962, a brand new GTO would cost its owner a whopping $18,000! Now, that might not sound too expensive, but that’s close to $140,000 in today’s money. And, you couldn’t just take your money to the showroom and buy one. In typical Ferrari fashion, the prospective buyer had to be first approved by Enzo Ferrari, himself. Oh, and by his North American dealer, too. Outrageous, but true. Now, those who did the math, would have by now calculated the total engine displacement to be 3,000cc, or in other words, a 3.0-litre. And you’ll would be correct! The all-alloy V12 carburetted engine made 300 horsepower and came with a 5-speed synchromesh manual gearbox. The car weighed just under 900 kgs, which meant it could do the sprint from 0-100 km/h in just over 5.5 seconds and hit a  top speed close to 280 km/h. The GTO is one of the all-time greats! An original example of this car, sells for many of millions of dollars, today. That is, if you can find one to splurge your jackpot lottery money, on.

Seen here doing what she was made to do, race!

But, somewhere in the depth of New Zealand, there’s a man named Rod Temporo, who has defied automotive belief by doing the unimaginable. He and his team of artisans have created a Ferrari 250 GTO replica, in a shed! But don’t for a second think that this guy doesn’t know what he is doing. In fact, Temporo is a master metalworker and has been recreating vintage cars like this, for decades. As you will see in the video, everything is done by hand and with absolute dedication and heartwarming passion. One of the reasons why it took this team 4 years to finish this project, if we dare call it that. Hand-beating the sheet metal on wooden bucks with just hammers and a keen eye for detail, to create this orgasmic body, is not for everyone. If you are someone who appreciates art, vintage cars, Ferraris or just sheer dedication and passion, you owe it to yourself to watch this video. Trust us, you won’t regret it.
