Ultimate “Jugaad”: Russian replaces jammed wheel of his SUV with tree trunk and drives on

On his way to St Petersburg, Eduard Alimov’s Chevrolet Niva SUV stuck itself in a swamp and got bogged down. Traces of water entered the engine, and the rear wheel on the left hand side got jammed. The Russian somehow managed to get the engine splutter and start, but couldn’t get the stuck rear wheel to move. Edward found himself in a fix, as he didn’t even have the money to get the vehicle towed to his destination.

In what appears to be the ultimate automotive “jugaad” we’ve seen in recent times, Edward, with help from a friend, used tree trunks in place of the wheel and drove themselves back home; trunks grinding in agony against asphalt. Edward and his friend used a saw to cut three pieces of a tree trunk, which they used one by one to wedge into place as a makeshift wheel, or in this case, a sledge. To fix the log, they used a winch with a steel rope, attaching it to the bumper. The rope was then stretched under the body of the car and fixed the trunk onto the rear axle.

The crude DIY fix worked, and left onlookers stumped (pun intended) as Edward hurtled towards St Petersburg at speeds of up to 30 mph. As one of birch tree stump wore itself away, he replaced it with another one, and drove on. Lucky for Edward, the cops weren’t around to watch him. We might add that this DIY fix, though the stroke of a genius, is highly dangerous.
