There was a time when 150 cc bikes were considered to be performance oriented offerings in the Indian Motorcycle market. Today, you can choose between a commuter, stylish or a performance oriented 150 cc motorcycle according to your needs. The newest member to join the stylish 150 cc motorcycle group happens to be the Suzuki Gixxer 155. Only their second offering in the 150 cc segment after going solo post their split with TVS, the Gixxer has managed to generate a good amount of excitement in the market, since it was first unveiled at the Auto Expo earlier this year. The stylish Suzuki will compete head on with the Yamaha FZ 2.0, the Hero Xtreme, Honda Trigger and the upcoming Bajaj Pulsar 150 NS.

Styling and Features

The chassis on the Gixxer 155 is based on the design philosophy of the mighty Hayabusa and the GSX- R1000, so if you compare the styling on the Gixxer to their earlier 150 cc motorcycle, the GS 150 R, the design on the new bike is muscular, bold and will attract the younger population. The aggressive design philosophy starts off with the V-shaped headlamp which sweeps backwards and is topped off by a matt plastic cowl which hides the instrument cluster behind it. The fuel tank looks wide from the riders perspective, however, the bulge takes a sharp inwards curve to accommodate the riders knees. The ‘C’ shaped extended panel below the tank carries the ‘Gixxer’ tag with pride. We like the way the kick starter has been designed and goes well with the Y-shaped side panel. The rear panel merges neatly with the pillion grab rails, which finishes things off with a ‘Devils Horns’ look.

The fat rear tyres will please those who cringe at the sight of thin rubber and also help in improved stability, better ride and handling. The Gixxer’s exhaust is a fat, chunky unit which gets twin outlets for better fuel burning efficiency and should also help the bike sound sporty. The unit gets a chrome rear end and a heat plate that looks and feels premium. The tail light is an LED unit, but we feel the rear fender is a little too long and doesn’t go well with the sporty look of the motorcycle. However, it will do a good job of keeping the spray from the rear tyre under control when the going gets wet.

The Gixxer gets a short, flat handlebar finished in black which should help the rider with a comfortable upright riding position. The instrument cluster is an orange back-lit digital display with a speedometer, a horizontal tachometer redlined at 9500rpm, an odometer, a fuel-gauge, trip-meters and a gear-shift indicator, along with the basic tell-tale lights.

Engine & Economy

The Gixxer 155 comes with a 154.9 cc, single cylinder air-cooled unit which churns out 14.8PS and 14Nm of torque. These figures are marginally more than their other 150cc offering, the GS150R. The motorcycle features ‘SEP’ or Suzuki Eco Performance, which was first used in their Let’s scooter. The technology is claimed to enhance performance without compromising on the fuel efficiency front. The Gixxer will sip its fuel through a carburetor though and unlike the GS150 which has a 6-speed gearbox, the Gixxer gets a 5-speed box. Given the characteristics of the engine, expect good low end and mid-range performance.
